Synchronous optic network (SONET) technology is a standard for optical telecommunications transport that provides a flexible architecture capable of accommodating future applications with a variety of transmission rates. The speed and cost of SONET make the technology competitive with alternatives like ATM and Gigabit Ethernet.
One of the contributing factors to reliability and fault-tolerant protection in a network is SONET technology. Syringa Networks is equipped with Fujitsu SONET multiplexers and uses the SONET rings architecture known as “self-healing rings”. This technology uses automatic protection switching (APS) that creates redundant copies of traffic and intelligently monitors the quality and automatically re-routes traffic if the transmission quality degrades, a cable is cut, or a network node experiences failure.
