Understanding the QoS enabled network



MPLS networks provide customers with a method of prioritizing traffic. This allows them to leverage a single network connection for multiple applications without impacting desired performance.

Time sensitive applications like voice and video can take the highest priority while less critical applications like email can take the lowest priority and still function properly.


QoS and the class of service queues



Customers who use traditional private networks or Internet network access across sites are unable to classify traffic, creating an environment where applications are competing for bandwidth. This is commonly referred to as "best-effort". This best-effort scenario means that a voice call might suddenly experience degraded quality because another user is accessing a remote database or downloading large files.

With an MPLS-based network environment each application can have a priority assigned to ensure that bandwidth is optimized by the needs of each application. This in turn allows a business to utilize a single connection for multiple applications and avoid the costs associated with multiple access charges.
